Where do you live and train?
San Diego , CA
Ideal training spot, conditions, companions?
Mountain trails above 5,000 ft.
Years running, cycling, or competing?
31-plus though I still have the same love for the sport that I did when I first started!
What type of races do you prefer (i.e trail ultras)?
Trail races of any distance but my favorite race of all time is the Boston Marathon – it’s a magical experience!
How did you hear or find out about Injinji tetratsoks?
I first recall reading of them in a trail running magazine a few years ago.
How long have you been wearing the tetratsoks?
6 and counting...
Your personal tetratsok of choice?
The mini-crew in white
How do the tsoks work for you, and what do you like best about them?
Tetrasoks provide the ideal base layer for any type of footwear! In short, whether I plan on wearing anything ranging from sandals to hiking boots, I’ll first throw on a pair of Injinjis because they just seem to make everything not only fit but more so feel better!
How have the tetratsoks changed your experience training and competing?
As I alluded to previously, because of the enhanced fit, I never worry about things like developing a hot spot or getting a blister.
Do you have a memorable experience or story about using the tetratsoks for training or competing? If so, please share it…..
Last year while coaching some high school track athletes, several complained that the balls of their feet burned during races – due to friction created between their bare foot and the shoe’s spike plate. Well, to make a long story short, I convinced them to wear Injinji micros and this wound up working like a charm! They still got the feeling of “running barefoot while wearing only spikes” but without the heat build-up. Problem solved!
What would you most like to accomplish athletically presently and/or long-term?
I would like to do more long runs benefiting Native American as well as other causes!
Favorite Quotation or Personal Motto?
“Life’s a journey, not a destination…” – Steven Tyler sings those lyrics in the Aerosmith tune, “Amazing”
What inspires you to reach for more in your sport and in your life?
I have always felt running empowered me. On that note, getting fit for life is a win-win situation because as far as I am concerned, when I am healthy and feeling good about myself, I am more motivated to achieve more in all facets of my life, not to mention passing that sense of “well being” along to others.
Favorite foods for training and competing?
I LOVE nacho chips and am inclined to eat just about any and everything I can that will sit on a chip. In short, if I have a chip in hand then forks need not apply!
Favorite post race meal?
Nacho chips and [insert your favorite post-race meal here]!
Other hobbies or interests that you like to spend your time doing?
I love to write - and that includes poetry and song lyrics – and travel, especially to wilderness areas.
Advice you would give to someone just starting out running or cycling, or in a new sport in general?
First of all, don’t go overboard and do too much too soon because if you wind up sore and/or injured, your enthusiasm will definitely suffer. Secondly, keep it fresh (i.e., mix up your training routes, train with others and treat yourself now and then to something – like a new pair of Injinjis – as a reward for a solid week of training!).
Finally, consistency is KEY and on that note, if you simply stick with it your goals will all soon be within reach!
Best advice you have ever received from a fellow athlete, or non-athlete?
I've known 4-time Boston and NYC Marathon winner Bill Rodgers since I was 17-years old - and even worked in his Boston store, Bill Rodgers Running Center, at one point so I'd like to share a quote from Bill:
"To be a consistent winner means not just preparing one day, one month or even one year - but for a lifetime!"
Personal hero or role model?
My parents...
